The Installation Process

We removed the existing concrete walkway and installed a beautiful paver walkway replacement. This included the porch, soldier’s course and curbstones bordering the mulch bed and walkway.

The type of pavers we used were Stone Ridge Nicolock Pavers in the color choice of South Bay. For the soldier’s course, we installed Charcoal-colored Ridgebrick in a Running Bond pattern. The Step Treads we installed were Fullnoses and the color was also Charcoal.

First we used a jackhammer to remove the existing concrete walkway. Either we excavated with our skidsteer or by hand anywhere did it by hand where the skidsteer didn’t have access. We installed a filter fabric below the base, compacted 4 inches of 21a gravel, then added 1 inch of concrete polymeric sand in the joints to interlock the pavers.

We installed curbstones between the mulch bed and walkway because the elevation of the mulch was much higher than the walkway and we did not want the mulch washing out onto the walkway. The customer wanted the walkway to remain at 3′ wide. Though we usually recommend a walkway width of 4 feet or longer, we made an exception because the client was very set on keeping the original dimensions.

Besides the installation, we also removed the old black ADS pipe under the concrete walkway and installed a PVC pipe in its place. We did this because the pressure of the new walkway would crush the plastic pipe, which would cause leaks and cause the walkway to ultimately fail if water was trapped underneath. This was difficult, as the irrigation line was located exactly where curbstones needed to be installed, so we spent time digging up the entire line and relocating it as well. We are constantly looking for anything that could pose a threat to our project’s integrity and take proactive steps like this to avoid issues.
